Job Safety Assessment - Carpenter
The following assessment has been prepared to assist Kent State staff in the identification of hazards that may be present in University work classifications. It is only a guide and should not be taken to imply that only the listed hazards are the only risk present in the applicable work classification. It is the responsibility of all employees, supervisors, and managers to constantly evaluate each work task (before, during, and after performance of the task) and identify any hazards that could be a danger to the worker and take steps to control, reduce, and/or eliminate the risk to the University worker.

Use machine guards, avoid direct contact by using push sticks or safe devices |

Wear proper gloves and eye protection; PPE instruction |

Potential fume inhalation from paints, cleaners, solvents, and stains |
Work in ventilated areas to lessen and avoid paint, stain, and thinner vapors; wear proper respiratory protection when applicable and/or needed; train in Hazard Communication and PPE |

Improper use of electrical equipment and power tools |
Use electrically grounded tools, if using electric tools; avoid contact with moving parts of any tool; use proper machine guarding where applicable; instruct in Logout/Lockout and Machine Guarding Safety |

Constant heavy lifting; using ladders while carrying loads up and down |
Use proper lifting techniques and ergonomic principles; seek assistance with heavy loads exceeding 40 pounds and/or when applicable |
|
Potential exposure to hazardous waste, materials, biohazards, dusts, and fumes |
Wear proper PPE gloves, eye protection, and applicable respiratory protection for fumes and dust |
|
Improper use of hand tools |
Avoid using tools in situations that may cause pinching or smashing hazards to hands or other body parts due to slipping or other accidents |
|
Potential electric shock |
Maintenance of energized tools/equipment is not allowed by unauthorized mechanics; use Lockout/Tagout system to ensure safety |
|
Utilization of material handling equipment and small electrical campus carts |
Train for forklift and campus small cart use |
|
Possible improper construction and use of scaffolding and/or ladders |
Secure scaffolding to floor and a secure upright structure to ensure stable use of the scaffolding; evaluation by qualified person when possible |
|
Potential exposure to loud noises while working inside Carpenter Shop |
Instruct proper use of hearing PPE; participation in the Hearing Conservation program |
|
Potential for asbestos-containing materials (ACM) exposure |
Awareness of Asbestos notification (annual) and the areas of the University with current identified locations; also awareness that the University may still have asbestos-containing materials that may not have been identified |
