Chautauqua Institution is pleased to announce 鶹ý President Beverly Warren will be among the featured lecturers during the institution’s weeklong investigation of “The Forgotten: History and Memory in the 21st Century,” Aug. 11-18, 2018. President Warren’s talk will focus on the lessons, learnings and remembrances of May 4, 1970. President Warren will speak at 10:45 a.m. Aug. 15 in the Chautauqua Amphitheater on the institution grounds.
“It is said that those who do not remember their history are doomed to repeat it,” says Chautauqua Institution President Michael Hill. “This week’s focus invites our community and those the world over to consider how we preserve, honor and ultimately learn from what was and what is.”
Kent State’s global family of alumni, scholars, students and friends are invited to join in this opportunity to reflect and share learnings and perspectives.
“Particularly as we prepare for the 50th anniversary of May 4, 1970, it is important for Kent State to play a major role in Chautauqua’s conversation on history and memory in the 21st century,” President Warren says.
In addition to housing and sponsoring the May 4 Visitors Center on the Kent Campus, the university annually commemorates the day when lives were forever altered when the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of demonstrators, killing four people and wounding nine. President Warren will share insights on Kent State’s journey toward becoming a vanguard of peaceful resolution and a champion of civil discourse.
The Holocaust, the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact of digital memory are among the other areas of investigation that week at Chautauqua. A list of speakers and events for Week Eight is available at and will be updated regularly through mid-June when the schedule for the summer is completed.
In addition to being livestreamed on Facebook Live, President Warren’s talk will be shared by the City Club of Cleveland.
