The School of Visual Communication Design recently welcomed Daphne Firos to its faculty.
Firos, whose background is in both architecture and graphic design, will teach students three-dimensional "form building and the integration of type and image in projects that range from packaging to environmental graphics."
"My focus both professionally and at the VCD is 3D design, and therefore I'm really looking forward to teaching students about this challenging part of the field and helping them develop their individual voice," Firos said. "I am also happy to have the opportunity to work with Professor David Middleton, as he has been instrumental in developing this area of the program."
Firos brings with her a global perspective of graphic design, having both worked and studied in several countries. She earned her bachelor's degree in architecture at Carnegie Mellon University before pursuing a graduate degree in design and art direction at Elisava Escola Superior de Disseny in Barcelona.
While in Barcelona, Firos worked on retail, identity, environmental and web design at a boutique firm with international clients. She then stepped into a new role as a senior designer and strategist at the international, award-winning company UXUS in Amsterdam.
"My husband and I were living in Amsterdam when he accepted a position as a tenure-track assistant professor in Kent State's College of Architecture and Environmental Design," Firos said. "We both loved our time abroad, but were happy to return to the States for such a great opportunity."
"I am very proud to be part of the VCD faculty," Firos said. "Everyone has been very welcoming and it's a privilege to work with such talented designers."
