The art of translation, in its many forms, has been with us for thousands of years, and has been a central building block for society at large. Considering this rich history, International Translation Day was created as an opportunity to pay tribute to language professionals around the world whose commitment to studying, understanding, and innovating translation methods have paved the way to develop, strengthen, and improve communication from a global standpoint.
What Is International Translation Day and When Is it Celebrated?
In 2017, International Translation Day was declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations. It may come as no surprise, but the United Nations is one of the world’s largest employers of language professionals.
This internationally recognized day celebrates language professionals across the globe whose expertise has contributed to the global human rights movement, establishing peace among nations and fostering international relationships for the purpose of development and solidarity. International Translation Day is celebrated on September 30 each year.
What Is the Significance of September 30?
, recognized by the Catholic church, is celebrated on September 30. St. Jerome is known as the “patron saint of translators” and spent much of his life translating scripture and passages from the Bible. Thus, he was likely one the first known language professionals, and International Translation Day is now celebrated as an acknowledgement of his early work.

Language professionals around the world – including translators, interpreters, reporters, editors, and many more – celebrate International Translation Day as an important reminder of how much they and their predecessors have achieved by studying communication and continually developing new means of communication.
It is because of international translation that we are able to advocate for our allies, engineer intelligent software, take part in intercultural dialogue, strategize with world leaders for the well-being of people and our planet, and so much more.
