SMC celebrates spring 2019 Karamu Ya Wahitimu/Celebración de los Graduados

The Student Multicultural Center (SMC) wrapped up the academic year with our Karamu Ya Wahitimu/Celebración de los Graduados cultural pre-commencement celebration. We reached another record high by having over 290 graduates register to participate in Karamu. The students shared their reflections and mentioned that they felt the event overall was excellent and that they felt valued and culturally affirmed during the ceremony.

We are quite busy this summer as well: We are hosting 18 students as part of the Academic S.T.A.R.S. (Students Achieving and Reaching for Success) program this summer. This 6-week program includes five weeks of coursework (taking Black Experience and College Writing) and in the final week, students participate in a Rites of Passage experience to connect them to their ancestry. Throughout the program students are building community, experiencing cultural enrichment and gaining a great academic experience that will prepare them for their first year at Â鶹´«Ã½. We are also preparing for the arrival of 300 students for our 2019 Kupita/Transiciones cultural orientation program in August. This program has an emphasis on academic, social and community connections that enhance a sense of belonging and cultural affirmation.

Finally, we are continuing our fundraising efforts for our Student Multicultural Center Emergency Fund. This fund will support our students who are in need with their tuition, books and other cost of attendance needs. To donate, please click the link below!
