Hold Policy for Courses Not Taught

It is important that the 鶹ý Catalog reflect actual curricula being taught. For that reason, the Office of Curriculum Services will place a hold on all courses that have not been taught for four or more consecutive years. The “hold” status is notification only; the courses are not considered inactive and still will be displayed in the University Catalog. However, their status in the Banner course inventory will change from “active” to “hold.” Curriculum Services will notify in advance each dean and chair/director of courses placed on hold.

Academic units will be requested to review their courses on hold and inactivate through the regular curriculum approval process the ones that will no longer be offered.

While courses are on hold, they may be scheduled. Academic units can notify Curriculum Services their desire to offer a course on hold so its status can be changed to active in Banner. Courses that are taught remain active in Banner. Courses not taught will be put back on hold.

Courses that are on hold for two years will be inactivated. The dean and chair/director will be notified in advance of such action, and the courses will be included as a lesser action item on an EPC agenda. Inactivated courses are removed from the University Catalog and cannot be scheduled. However, inactivated courses remain in the course inventory and may be reactivated following the regular curriculum approval process.

Exceptions to Policy

The Hold Policy does not apply to courses designated as any of the following:

  • Variable content seminar (xxx91)
  • Practical experience (xxx92)
  • Variable topic workshop (xxx93)
  • Special topics (xxx95)
  • Individual investigation(xxx96)
  • Variable content colloquium (xxx97)
  • Research (xxx98)
  • Master’s thesis (6x199, 6x299)
  • Doctoral dissertation (8x199, 8x299)

In addition, the Hold Policy does not apply to slashed courses (4/5, 4/5/7, 6/7, 6/8) where one or more of the courses are offered with enrollment.
