Student in CACM Class Selected for YES! Magazine Spring 2017 Essay Contest Literary Gem

This semester Karen Cunningham had students in the Honors section of Introduction to Conflict Management write essays for the YES! Magazine Spring 2017 Writing Competition.  The topic involved reading and responding to an article about gender identity and the use of gender pronouns.  The top three essays from the class were submitted to YES! magazine for the competition.

YES! Magazine has now officially announced the essay contest winners and has published them on their website, and one of the essays submitted from the class was recognized.   A portion of Emily Thomas'  essay was selected as a “Literary Gem” — and here it is …

In a world where tragedy, violence, and loneliness roots itself into the everyday; where authentic community feels sparse; where a clear distinction between reality and artificiality is lacking, the least one can do is show love and respect to those one encounters.

—Emily Thomas, 鶹ý, Kent, Ohio.

Congratulations, Emily!!!

This is the fifth time that Professor Cunningham has used the YES! writing competition for a class assignment, and the fourth time that one of her students has had been recognized for the quality of their writing.  (We’ve had one winner, and three literary gems so far.)
