Kent State Research Review: Student Recognized for Lupus Research

Haley ShasteenKent State molecular and cellular biology and psychology student Haley Shasteen’s personal battle with lupus has pushed her to research what really causes certain frustrating symptoms.

Shasteen participated in the 2018 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, taking first place for her research project, “Cognitive Impairments of those with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.” Her research focused on ‘brain fog,’ the feeling of cognitive impairment that many people with lupus deal with, herself included.

“I know what it feels like to have brain fog,” Shasteen said. “The more reading I do about this, the more interesting it all becomes to me.”
