Smith-Pryor specializes in African American history and women’s/gender history. Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in government from Harvard in 1984 and a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School in 1987. After practicing law for six years in New York, she said she recognized that career as overly toxic and returned to academia, earning her Ph.D. in American history from Rutgers University in 2001 and then joined the faculty at Kent State.
