Revised grading options and deadlines for Spring 2020
As a follow-up to the email sent on Friday, March 20, notifying you about new grading options for Spring 2020, the following is intended to provide greater clarity on these options. Know that the university is committed to continuing the excellent instruction you expect from us for the remainder of this semester in a way that is as flexible and equitable as possible.
We know that the switch to remote learning has been challenging for some of you, and thus we have created options to help you proceed with as little impact to your GPA as possible. However, despite the challenges the semester poses, we strongly encourage you to keep up with your coursework so that you are making good progress toward your degree. Reach out for help if you need it. Use this time to consult with your advisor and campus resources to decide how you want to work through this, and go to /keeponlearning for more support. Prior to making decisions, we encourage you to carefully read through all the options and consult with the appropriate university personnel in order to understand possible repercussions of your decisions.
You may have decided to withdraw from a course after President Diacon’s March 10 announcement regarding the suspension of face-to-face classes. Given the new grading policies, you may now regret that decision. If this is the case, we are providing you the option to re-add until Wednesday, April 1, at 11:59 p.m. The procedure is outlined below.
Revised Enrollment and Grading Timeline
SPRING 2020: IMPORTANT DATES
- March 10: Kent State makes a decision to suspend face-to-face instruction
- March 16: Courses restart remotely
- April 1: Re-add deadline (if you withdrew from a course between March 10 and April 1, 2020)
- **April 28: Withdraw deadline
- May 13: Grades post

** This deadline is prorated for flexibly scheduled sections. Procedures
OPT TO TAKE A COURSE FOR PASS/FAIL
Deadline: Monday, May 18, 11:59 p.m.
Between now and Monday, May 18, 2020, you may opt to take one, or more, of your Spring 2020 courses on a Pass/Fail basis, if applicable. This deadline is five days after your final course grade will be posted in FlashLine. We are providing these extra days to give you time to decide whether the Pass/Fail option is the best for you. Pass/Fail applies to undergraduate and graduate courses. Taking a course for Pass/Fail will NOT affect your GPA. You will receive credit for the Pass grade and no credit for the Fail grade. The Pass (Y) grade and Fail (Z) grade will be posted on your academic transcript.
The options for Spring 2020 also waive several stipulations currently in place. These one-time waived stipulations now will allow you to request the Pass/Fail grade for courses in your major, minor and certificate; developmental courses; Kent Core courses; writing intensive courses; and graduate-level courses. A grade of D or better will constitute a Pass for undergraduate students, and a grade of C or better will constitute a Pass for graduate students. See the FAQs for more information about Pass/Fail.
Please find the form here to request to take a course for Pass/Fail and submit that by May 18, 11:59 p.m.

Between now and Monday, April 28, the last day of classes in Spring 2020, you may opt to withdraw from a course. This will NOT affect your GPA; however, it may impact your eligibility for future financial aid.
Visit www.kent.edu/financialaid/SAP to learn about academic progress requirements related to financial aid and scholarships. If you have questions, please discuss them with the One Stop for Student Services (or the student services department at the campus you attend) before taking action in order to best understand the consequences of withdrawing from the course.
