International Student Profile - Meet Tim Si

Tim Si International Alumni at Kent State

International student alumnus Tim Si, originally from Liaoning Province in China, was able to develop valuable skills for his career in architecture and participate in some exciting on-campus opportunities while studying at Kent State.

A graduate of the architecture program in 2015, Tim is now an Architectural Designer for Robert P. Madison International, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio. During his time there, Tim has worked on many projects including Halle K-8 School, the Great Lake Science Center, the Cleveland Public Library MLK branch proposal, the CWRU Dental School and more.

Tim credits the time he spent working on projects in the studio with enhancing his architectural skills and preparing him for his career as an Architectural Designer. One of Tim’s favorite architecture courses at Kent State included a field trip to Los Angeles in which he was able to visit architectural sights and the offices of famous architects in the area. Tim also enjoyed his studio courses, and one of his favorite projects was designing a multipurpose building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This project was a great opportunity to work with a team and to experience working on a project remotely.

This studio experience was especially useful, because with the pandemic, Tim’s work is now remote. He describes remote work as not easy and as having some positives and negatives overall. While there is more freedom in his working hours and environment, he misses the connection of the office and the ease of in-person communication.

Additionally, while he was at Kent State, Tim also participated in some unique opportunities on campus. With his hobby in photography, Tim was able to channel that skill to be a photographer for the campus newspaper. He greatly enjoyed the opportunities this position brought to attend Kent State athletics events up close. Afterall, when you are photographing a basketball game, you get to be pretty close to the court!

Overall, Tim enjoyed his time at Kent State, participating in activities that enhanced his career and skills as well as those that were for fun!
