The Creation of Brainchild

Brainchild began as a class project directed by Dr. Claire Culleton, Department of English, in an Honors section of an editing and publishing course offered in the fall 2013 semester. Submissions were limited to work produced by students at Â鶹´«Ã½ in the Honors College. The  represented a collection of art and literary pieces such as photography, poetry, creative writing, and thesis abstracts.

After completion of the course, the project was turned over to the Honors College. Honors College advisor Aaron Hanlin supervised a team of students in preparing the document for print publication.

During the 2013-2014 academic year, the Honors College worked closely with the executive board of the to develop the publication into a regional outlet for Honors students to publish exceptional creative art and literary work.  Under the direction of faculty advisor Aaron Hanlin, five undergraduate students enrolled in a yearlong course in which they were responsible for soliciting and evaluating work for publication, editing, layout, production, marketing, promotion, and distribution.

Brainchild is a publication that provides creative students in undergraduate Honors programs and colleges with an outlet for publishing their work and sharing it with the world. Students who attend Â鶹´«Ã½ may submit work for publication or apply to be a part of the team that publishes Brainchild.

Student Involvement

The Brainchild staff is composed of students enrolled in the Honors College at Â鶹´«Ã½. Students are supervised by a full-time staff member in the Honors College. The staff makes all decisions related to the publication process. Students solicit and evaluate work for publication while gaining practical experience in editing, layout, production, marketing, promotion, and distribution of the magazine. Student staff members may come from any major but must apply to be a part of the Brainchild staff, which is offered as a two-semester course through the Â鶹´«Ã½ Honors College. Staff members are not paid for being a part of Brainchild, but they receive Honors credit hours for their work.
