National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Every day it seems another cyber security breach has been discovered that may directly impact you. Were you one of the 40 million people who used a bank card at Target in December 2013 and had your information stolen? Or one of the estimated 143 million Americans whose personal data was stolen recently in the massive Equifax data breach?

October was National Cyber Security Awareness month, and Information Services participated by hosting some fun and informative events across the university. At the Haunted Library event, students had the opportunity to answer email phishing trivia questions and then go “fishing” for prizes. New this year for faculty and staff, was a cyber security-themed escape room where friends and colleagues competed against each other for the fastest “break out” time by solving a series of puzzles. The security team also presented to various departments on the Kent and Regional Campuses about security best practices.

Cyber Security Awareness Month comes once a year, but protecting personal and university information is important year-round. For self-paced online security training and to learn how to avoid the many scams targeted at you, visit secureIT.kent.edu.
