Our institution and faculty rightfully value academic integrity, understanding the importance of fairness, and the need to provide students with the academic credentials they have earned.

Nothing can prevent cheating, whether assessing student performance in an online or in-person classroom. There are, however, several ways to deter cheating and encourage academic integrity: Values Reinforcement, Exam Proctoring, Exam Construction, and Exam Alternatives.

SETTING UP ONLINE PROCTORING

Respondus Monitor and Proctorio are the solutions for online proctoring at Kent State and are automated proctoring technologies that allow students with a webcam and an internet connection to complete exams and quizzes while on camera; the services do not use live proctors but instead uses an automated algorithm to report on any exam session irregularities, which can be reviewed and interpreted by the class instructor.

Getting Started with Respondus Monitor

The Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment.  When students use Respondus LockDown Browser, they cannot print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications on the computer.  When an assessment is started, students' browser screen is locked into it until they click submit for grading. Respondus Monitor builds upon Lockdown Browser by adding an AI-based proctoring solution which records the student's testing session.

Environmental Check function can no longer be enabled for any proctored examination. Environmental Check must be manually disabled/deselected during the Startup sequence or manually disabled/deselected on existing Respondus Monitor quizzes/exams.

SETTING UP A PRACTICE QUIZ

Offering a low-stakes or no-stakes quiz is a great way for students to practice taking an assessment with Respondus or Procotorio and getting technical support (if needed) before a larger-stakes exam.

Using Proctorio with Canvas New Quizzes

In order to utilize Proctorio with Canvas New Quizzes, the New Quizzes CANNOT be linked within a Canvas module. The "Quizzes" course menu item will need to be visible to students and students must access the Proctorio-enabled Canvas New Quizzes from the "Quizzes" menu item. 

How do instructors and students prepare their computers for Proctorio or Respondus?

Proctorio

Instructors and students should be using either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge with the installed prior to conducting any work that requires Proctorio.

For each course in Canvas, follow these steps to enable Proctorio:

  1. Click Settings in the Course Navigation, click on the Navigation tab, drag Secure Exam Proctor (Proctorio) to the top section of the course navigation, and click Save. The placement of the Secure Exam Proctor (Proctorio) item does not matter, just as long as it is somewhere within the active section of the Course Navigation.
  2. After being added to the Course Navigation, return to the course homepage and click on Secure Exam Proctor (Proctorio) in the Course Navigation to complete the installation of Proctorio into the course.
  3. The Secure Exam Proctor (Proctorio) item must remain in the active section of the Course Navigation at all times for any Proctorio function to work in a course.
  4. Students will not see the Secure Exam Proctor (Proctorio) item if they are using Chrome or Edge with the Proctorio extension installed; students clicking on the menu item will be guided through the steps to install the extension into Chrome or Edge. 

Upon the first time of Proctorio being added to their first course in Canvas, the instructor will receive an automated invitation to a training course from Proctorio. The training course contains excellent step-by-step videos on how to use Proctorio in Canvas.

Respondus Monitor

Faculty do not need to download any software or use a specific web browser to use Respondus with their courses.

Students will need to download the appropriate version of the Respondus Monitor software:

  • For quizzes that are located in Canvas, . 
  • For quizzes that are located in ALEKS, . 
  • For quizzes that are located in Pearson MyLabs
    • use to install the correct version for Windows, macOS, or non-managed ChromeBooks.
    • on ChromeBooks that are managed by a school or employer, use the to install.

How I enable Proctorio on quizzes from previous courses in Canvas?

Once Proctorio has been enabled in the course in Canvas (Settings>Navigation>Drag "Secure Exam Proctor" to the list of active course items>clicking "Save"), edit the quiz, review the various quiz settings (due date, time, assigned students, etc), and finally review the "Proctorio Settings" tab on the quiz to ensure the desired proctoring settings have been chosen.

Which settings should I select?

There are several Proctorio and Respondus Monitor configurations to consider, which are well-documented with corresponding videos nearby each option. Consider the options you prefer for your exam proctoring environment and select options as needed. Can I practice (myself) by taking a Proctorio or Respondus Monitor quiz/exam?

Yes! First, set up your quiz/exam with Proctorio or Respondus Monitor settings. Next, create a guest user account at , enroll the account into the course, and log in to Canvas with the account to conduct testing.

I can’t see Proctorio settings. Why not?

Be certain that you’ve installed the for your Chrome browser on the computer you’re currently using.

Once a test has been taken, core Proctorio settings cannot be changed.

Students are having trouble taking my Proctorio exam, who can help?

A student has tried everything, and it still isn’t working out. What do I do?

Consider discussing the situation with your student. Under extreme/extenuating/documented circumstances, where a student made a good-faith effort to complete the exam and reach out for support, consider exploring options for making up the assessment.

What should I do about flagged behavior?

Students may worry and report concerns of flagged behaviors. Do not assume that all flagged behavior is indicative of cheating. Looking through exam recordings will often set your mind at rest. Do not immediately contact student and cause panic/stress for yourself and students. Consider your settings and what you are seeing and hearing (E.g. picture on the wall behind them; same IP addresses / on-campus = same IP address).

Can I use Proctorio or Respondus Monitor for my exams?
