I. Richmond Nettey, Ph.D., professor of aeronautics in �鶹��ý’s College of Aeronautics and Engineering, has been appointed the new chair of the Transportation Research Board Standing Committee on Airport Terminals and Ground Access at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

�鶹��ý has been recognized by the (ACE) for the university’s creation of a “one-stop shop” COVID-19 website, call line and email address, including its telemedicine and telehealth information for students.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, students in  �鶹��ý’s College of Nursing have been employed in hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio, where they have honed their skills and observed healthcare professionals on the front lines.

Apple and Google partnered in early April to create a new smartphone app that uses Bluetooth to track coronavirus cases. Using a technology called contact tracing, the app alerts a user when they come in contact with someone who has been positively diagnosed with COVID-19. Gokarna Sharma, assistant professor in Computer Science, recently answered 10 questions about the new app based on his professional opinion. Sharma is experienced in algorithms, blockchain and smart technologies such as this.

Kent State’s famous food truck, known for its mouth-watering pulled pork sandwiches and fresh-cut french fries, is now becoming known for giving back to its community. The university is loaning its campus food truck to Aramark to provide meals to students from Kent, Elyria and Lorain City School Districts who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

�鶹��ý President Todd Diacon recently presented six Kent State faculty members with the 2020 President’s Faculty Excellence Award, which recognizes exceptional performance that leads to the achievement of national or international recognition in the faculty member’s discipline.

Hylton, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as vice president for student affairs, effective May 1, 2020. In addition, Diacon has appointed Amoaba Gooden, Ph.D., as the interim vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, effective June 1, 2020.

Joseph D. Ortiz, Ph.D., professor and assistant chair in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Geology at �鶹��ý, recently authored a “News and Views” article in Nature Geoscience that discusses research carried out by another research team that reassessed the melt history and timing of the collapse of the Eurasian Ice Sheet Complex during the Last Deglaciation.

The �鶹��ý Board of Trustees approved three important budgetary measures to counter expected revenue reductions due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during a special Board meeting held May 6.

A century ago in 1920, The Ohio Flying School and Transport Company officially incorporated and opened Stow Field, now known as �鶹��ý Airport, Andrew Paton Field. To celebrate its centennial and recognize it as the oldest continuously operating airport in Ohio, Dave Poluga, airport manager, has launched the Aviation Art Contest “100 Years of Aviation.”

�鶹��ý is launching a series of videos showcasing the talents of our faculty and staff aimed at providing an uplifting respite from the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Beginning Friday, May, visitors to the  will be able to view a variety of special videos, online exhibits and interactive tours, all designed to honor and remember Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder, the Kent State students who lost their lives 50 years ago on the Kent State campus.

April’s observance as Autism Awareness Month is coming to a close, but research into the whys and hows of autism is always ongoing at �鶹��ý.

Michael N. Lehman, Ph.D., director of the Brain Health Research Institute at Kent State, said the university supports autism research that focuses on basic discoveries within the brain, as well as applied human research of students with autism, which makes Kent State’s body of research unique and diverse.

While locked down in their apartments or family homes, students in the Kent State course Journalism and Documentary are telling a story that future generations and historians will one day discuss: What was college life like when the coronavirus pandemic changed the world?
