Student Spotlight: Teresa Morek

Meet Teresa Morek!

“I chose Kent State because of the amazing art program, beautiful campus, safety and inclusivity,” said Teresa, “I knew from the day I toured campus that Kent was exactly what I wanted and that I didn't even need to look anywhere else.”

Major: Studio Art, Concentration in Sculpture and Expanded Media

Minor: Art History

Expected Graduation: 2027

Hometown: Mentor, OH

What is the reason you chose your major?

I chose my major because I have a deep passion for creating art. At first, I went into the art program as an Art Education major, but I felt like I was only choosing that for financial security. With help from peers and mentors, I decided to start following my dream of being a full-time artist as a Studio Art Major.

What would you like to do after graduation?

After graduation, I would love to create installations and be featured in many galleries. I also would enjoy working at an art museum full/part-time or being a part-time art professor. My big goal as an artist is to have a piece of my art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

How has your school or program made a difference to you?

My program as a studio art major has helped me take control of my mental health and restore my love for art. In my previous schooling, art was extremely stressful and I often created pieces that I was proud of but didn't necessarily connect with. A lot of the time I felt like I was making it because I had to and not because I wanted to. Kent State's art program allows me to create art that I want to. I often find myself coming to the studio to work on a project outside of class solely because I want to work on it. It has boosted the way I feel about art and myself!

What are things you love about Kent State, your major or your school?

At Kent State, I love being able to walk everywhere or take the bus to the studio whenever I need. I love my major because I feel like it is putting me on the track I need to be on to be successful as an artist. I also enjoy my academic advisor, Maria. She is so helpful and patient even through all of the worrying and stress I've put my schooling under.

What has been your favorite class at Kent State?

My favorite class at Kent is probably my Honor's Colloquium class about joy and delight in the world. It’s so refreshing to give my attention to something as simple as finding joy in the world. It also gives me a chance to think on a deeper level than any of my other classes here.

What is your best memory at Kent State?

My best memory at Kent State is walking around in the greenhouse by myself and drawing the plants. It's so relaxing and warm there and not a lot of people know about it. I like to go there when I feel cooped up in my dorm and need somewhere to go
