
The Military Mapping Maidens of World War II exhibit is now on display on the first floor of the Â鶹´«Ă˝ Library through November 15. Who were the Mapping Maidens? The exhibit, sponsored by the Department of Geography, highlights the unique military service of Kent State alumna Bea (Shaheen) McPherson and 223 other women. These “Military Mapping Maidens” or “3M Girls” contributed to the war effort by researching, drafting and compiling over 40,000 maps in the Army Map Service (AMS), now known as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. “...

Description: What makes people happy? Does money buy happiness or do unhappy people not know where to shop? Does marriage make men happier and women unhappier? Is using social media harmful or beneficial for well-being? Can well-being be increased? This course reviews the scientific evidence regarding these and other questions about the determinants of happiness from an interdisciplinary perspective (psychology, economics, philosophy).

In July 2024, 13 Â鶹´«Ă˝ students participated in the Kigali Summer Institute, where they traveled to the heart of Africa to study peacebuilding and reconciliation in post-genocide Rwanda. One student noted that their experience in Rwanda opened their eyes to the possibilities of forgiveness and the role of individual people in creating safe, peaceful, communities. The McNair Scholars Program at Kent State is celebrating 25 years of student support. McNair is a federally-funded TRIO grant through the Department of Education that supports first-generation, Pell eligible, and underrepresented students as they prepare for their post-baccalaureate endeavors.
