Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

Supporting Students as They Develop Critical Thinking Skills and Become Creative Problem Solvers

Kent State’s Division of Research and Economic Development created the annual Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) in 2015 to provide unique opportunities for undergraduate student researchers who represent nearly every Kent State course of study – from fashion design to chemistry to environmental studies. Students are paired with faculty mentors and gain valuable experience to clarify educational and career goals, enhance research skills and gain academic insight. The annual program culminates with students presenting their research at two events during which they compete for recognition and prizes.

At most universities, meaningful research experience is typically the domain of graduate students—SURE breaks that mold by immersing undergraduates in cutting-edge projects that prepare them for the next stage of their careers.

“SURE helped me learn beneficial skills as I obtained extensive  experience that increases my chances of getting into graduate school."
- Amanda Shafer, Junior, Psychology and Neuroscience

Enhancing Research Skills and Innovation

SURE engages students in one-on-one eight-week experiences. Students conduct research with real-world impact and benefits, and the program shapes students’ academic journeys and informs their future professional careers. SURE graduates become informed citizens who impact their communities long after graduation.

SURE student research work often enables students to publish papers about their work and present at regional, national and international conferences.

This unique and successful program has included more than 825 student researchers since 2016 and there are more than 200 student applicants for the 2025 session.

“My research experience enhanced my personal development, as well as my skills in communication, critical thinking, analysis, teamwork, time management and leadership.â€
-Wayne Nieh, ’24, Nursing

“I learned that people would have different ideas, but the ideas all ended up coming together in a way that benefitted everyone.â€
-Anna Anello, ’24, Neuroscience and Computer Science
