On the morning of May 4, 1970, �鶹��ý student Howard Ruffner was hanging out in the office of the Daily Kent Stater in Taylor Hall when the phone rang.

The Midwest editor from Life magazine, based in Chicago, was calling to find out if there were any student photographers who had been taking photos over the weekend. Kent State had been the scene of student protests for several days, and more demonstrations were expected that day.  

�鶹��ý’s nationally ranked Flight Technology program, in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, is one of only three nationwide that Delta Air Lines selected this year to become a Delta Propel Partner, a program that creates career opportunities for students studying to be future commercial pilots.

�鶹��ý’s long-standing relationship with the Tuscarawas County University Branch District to administer the Tuscarawas Campus of Kent State will continue through June 30, 2030, in a new 10-year agreement approved by the Kent State Board of Trustees.

Almost 50 years ago, the shootings of �鶹��ý students by the Ohio National Guard brought to a head the cultural divides that had split the nation. The �鶹��ý Museum’s exhibition, “Culture/Counterculture: Fashions of the 1960s and ’70s,” opening Sept. 20, explores the sharp contrast between supporters of the establishment and those opposed.

Cross-departmental collaborations are what Michael Lehman, the inaugural director of �鶹��ý’s Brain Health Research Institute, envisions for the future. His goal is to unite researchers from a wide range of disciplines at Kent State and throughout Northeast Ohio to explore, expand and advance our knowledge of the human brain and how it functions.

The �鶹��ý Alumni Association is proud to announce its 2019 Alumni Award recipients. Recipients are chosen based on their exceptional contributions in their chosen profession, in their communities and at Kent State.

�鶹��ý has made impressive moves in the rankings in the newly released 2020 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges list. Kent State has climbed three spots, a 3% increase, on the Top Public Schools list. Kent State is the only Northeast Ohio institution on the Top Public Schools list. 

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at �鶹��ý Geauga Campus is a rigorous academic environment that requires serious discipline, study, practice, and testing. It’s also an intimate environment of friends, instructors, and mentors who support each other from one challenge to the next, and inspire one another to reach out for the benefit of others. As a student association, they give back to the community through fundraising, strengthening the nursing program for future students and charitable outreach throughout the region.

�鶹��ý’s new FedEx Aeronautics Academic Center provides a world-class training ground to help aviation students and future pilots soar to even greater achievements.

�鶹��ý jazz ensembles instructor, Christopher J. Coles aspires to evoke emotions and conversations surrounding topics like social injustice and race through the display. “Nine Lives Project” has been viewed at workshops throughout Cleveland, Canada, and most recently broadcast in a Shuffle session with WKSU.

President Diacon says he plans to bring his prior experience to his new role and vision as president, he recently told Crain’s Cleveland Business.

A three-day trip is underway for �鶹��ý students to work with community leaders on finding new and creative ways to connect neighborhoods throughout Erie to its Bayfront, according to YourErie.com

Angela Neal-Barnett, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, says there is a stressful expectation for black women in corporate America to financially provide for their family.

Last year, �鶹��ý celebrated 100 years of Homecoming. This year, the university starts the next century of Kent State Homecoming celebrations with a new president leading the institution.

College of Arts and Sciences professor says that understanding how your child copes with anxiety is key to helping them with back-to-school nerves. 

�鶹��ý is pleased and proud to announce the return of “We the People,” a photography exhibition that shines a light on our common humanity.

Kent State’s Common Reading Experience is an opportunity for first-year students to read university-selected books and share a common experience with their peers. The goal is for freshmen to gain an understanding of the university’s values and to build and maintain relationships that foster success with faculty, administration and staff.

Cavs Legion Gaming Club (GC), the NBA 2K League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers, has teamed up with �鶹��ý Esports in a unique new partnership designed to help grow and strengthen the local gaming community in Northeast Ohio, as well as promote the university’s newly launched collegiate esports program. 

Researchers from the University of Washington and Washington University, along with other collaborators, are seeking answers to those questions. They studied the brains of mice to identify what causes them to stop seeking a reward — in essence, what makes them burn out.

Diacon expressed his desire to increase enrollment, keep Kent State affordable, continue a strong relationship with the city of Kent, honor the legacy of May 4 and advance the university’s Gateway Master Plan for redeveloping the front of campus.
