From Student to Researcher: SURE Program 2021 Student Spotlight

Kent State continues to foster innovation and promote the development of hands-on learning through various collaborative efforts focused on building experience and training. Among the opportunities offered through the university, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program provides undergraduate students with the chance to engage in an intensive research project during the summer break.

From Fashion to Solar, How Kent State Alumna Became the CEO of a Solar Company
Fashion merchandising alumna Emilie Oxel O'Leary, '93, is the CEO of Sunshine Solar, a mechanical installation company that provides solar power to major brands such as Target, L'Oreal and Amazon. Sunshine Solarβs first solar project was installing a solar carport for the Atlanta Falcons stadium. Since then, the company has installed solar panels to Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Verizon and FedEx whether it be with carport tops, rooftops or solar fields.

Kent State Hosts National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Northeast Ohio
βAn American Sunriseβ by Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, the first Native American poet laureate of the United States, will be the focal point as Kent State kicks off the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read Northeast Ohio community reading program. The kickoff event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 12, beginning promptly at 7 p.m. in the Kiva. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is appreciated.
Annual Rainbow Run Helps Support LGBTQ Students In Crisis
The Rainbow Run is one of most important fundraising events of the year for the university's LGBTQ+ Emergency Fund, available to assist any LGBTQ+ identifying Kent State student in financial crisis. The sixth annual Rainbow Run βfun runβ will take place on Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. on Risman Plaza. Kent State Student Wins Cancer Battle And Raises Almost $1 Million For Others Fighting Cancer
At the start of his freshman year at ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ in 2018, Tim Tusick was the epitome of health. At the end of that year, Tusick was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He remained strong throughout the treatments, but did not want to stay silent. When the Leukemia Lymphoma Society reached out to Tusick, he quickly agreed to help. And help, he did.

Department of English Students Spend Summer Teaching Across the Globe
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is one of the fastest growing global education fields, and Kent State students in the 2021 TEFL program taught international students via Zoom over the summer. The students created unique lesson plans and executed them entirely on their own and made lasting memories.

Kent State Again Named One of the Nationβs Most LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges and Universities by Campus Pride
Campus Pride has released its 2021 Best of the Best LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges and Universities list, and for the second time in two years, ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ has landed on it. Kent State is the only Ohio public university to make the 2021 list, and it again is the only school in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) to receive this recognition.

Kent State Honors College Student Announced as 2021 Portz Scholar
The National Collegiate Honors Council has announced ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ Honors College graduate Sarah Hagglund as a 2021 Portz Scholar. Hagglund is the 10th honors student from Kent State to be named a Portz Scholar since the national competition began in 1990.
